Nursing home falls are serious problems in the nursing home industry. It is well recognized that falls are a major cause of death and major disability for senior citizens, especially since many suffer from osteoporosis, or brittle bone disease.
The applicable federal regulation provides:
Falls (483.25(h)) (h) Accidents. The facility must ensure that-- (1) The resident environment remains as free of accident hazards as is possible; and (2) Each resident receives adequate supervision and assistance devices to prevent accidents.
Injury due to a fall is a legitimate basis for a nursing home complaint, and each year, many nursing homes receive citations from the State following surveys done after a resident suffers an injury due to a fall.
